The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: (NIV)

NOW THE word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying (AMP)

Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. (NIV)

This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.) (NIV)

The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?" (NIV)

Then they said to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may subside and be calm for us? For the sea became more and more [violently] tempestuous. (AMP)

Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. (KJV)

The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish." (NIV)

So the captain came and said to him, What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call upon your God! Perhaps your God will give a thought to us so that we shall not perish. (AMP)

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. (KJV)

All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. (NIV)

Then the mariners were afraid, and each man cried to his god; and they cast the goods that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. (AMP)
