Number 1 Bible Widget

Friday, August 01, 2008

The TopVerses widget has been installed more often than any other Bible widget according to WidgetBox.com statistics.

Our widget has been installed over 1,700 times on blogs, websites and social networking pages since it was launched six months ago, making it the most installed Bible widget on their site.
“This is exactly what I wanted for my blog. It’s easy to use and easily customized to fit my blog” wrote dojobo. “Wow, just what I was looking for!” says FranklinWDixon. The widget displays a random bible verse with formatting options to specify colors, fonts, Bible version and how often it should change.

Widget

Thursday, February 07, 2008

A Top Verses widget is now available through widgetbox.com. The random Bible verse widget can be installed on almost any blog or website and can be configured with you preferred colours, sizes and fonts. The verse can be set to change every visit (ie every time you refresh the page), hour, day or week, and can be displayed in AMP, NIV or KJV format.

If you select random version, then the verse is displayed in any of the three available versions. Otherwise it remembers the version that was last chosen by the user.

At present you have to choose the width and height of the verse widget but I am trying to get the dynamic sizing working so it adjusts the height automatically according to the length of the verse. Just waiting to hear back from widget box. You can see an example below. Click on the Get Widget button below the verse to get the HTML required to paste it into your own pages. You can then click the pencil icon to configure the width, height, colours, fonts, refresh rate and so forth. Please post your comments and feedback here!

New feature: Lookup verses by reference

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

The Bible Verse Search box has been enhanced to recognise book, chapter and verse references. For example, you can type in a book from the Bible, using any conceivable shortening or spelling (like 2 Corinthians, 2cor, IICor, etc) and see the verses for that book ordered by ranking.

Thanks to Stephen Smith, the director of information services at Crossway, for sharing his excellent code to achieve such a great result.

Top Verses - Now in multiple Bible versions

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Now you can search the Bible in more than one version and still see the results ranked by popularity, making it even easier to find what you’re looking for. The search looks in the texts of the New International Version (NIV), Amplified Bible (AMP) and King James Version (KJV), and returns any matching verse in your default version.

When you click on a particular verse, all versions are shown along with the context of surrounding verses.

JavaScript is used to provide an instant, intuitive scripture experience. Please post your comments and suggestions below.

Top Bible Verses Revealed

Thursday, October 11, 2007

A website has surveyed 37 million Bible references to rank verses by popularity, and found a way of using the rankings to make searching for verses easier.

Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) October 11, 2007 — The most popular scriptures have been revealed after an internet survey of 37 million Bible references. The survey results rank every Bible verse by popularity and are published on the TopVerses.com website.

A new search was created from the rankings to find Bible verses more quickly. Instead of starting from Genesis, the ranked search shows popular verses first. 87 of the top 100 verses are in the New Testament, and these can now be found without looking scrolling through the Old Testament first.

Top Verses will be my new search engine when preparing sermons and for my own personal Bible study. You no longer have to search through a hundred verses to find the one you have in mind. Most of the time, I find it on the first page.

Top Verses ran the survey in August 2007 by counting how often every Bible verse is referenced in web pages across the internet. The 31,101 verses were ranked by the results. As well as listing top verses overall, the site uses the results to rank Bible books and chapters. The most popular verse was John 3:16, with over twice the score of its nearest rival, John 1:1. Although John was the most popular Gospel, it was only sixth overall, with Ephesians taking first place. Shorter books scored better, and Malachi was the first Old Testament book at 19th, with 5 verses in the top 1,000.

The benefit of a ranked search is demonstrated by typing “world” to find John 3:16. Starting from Genesis, 96 verses match before John 3:16. Simply ranking the results places John 3:16 first, and saves 9 pages of wrong hits.

Church leaders have already praised the new site. Pastor Jason Hubbart from Every Nation Church, Sydney said, “Top Verses will be my new search engine when preparing sermons and for my own personal Bible study. You no longer have to search through a hundred verses to find the one you have in mind. Most of the time, I find it on the first page.”

The man behind the not-for-profit site, Peter B. Chapman, spoke of the impact it was having on the internet community. “Putting the most popular verses first makes the Bible much more accessible. All sorts of people are visiting the site and seeing the Bible in a new way. I love finding old favourites in Psalms. You can see the top 10 Proverbs by simply clicking on Proverbs.”

Background

The Top Verses website (www.topverses.com) was launched in October 2007 as a not-for-profit service to make the Bible more accessible. Over 37m Bible references were analysed to determine the verse rankings. These are published on the website and used in a ranked search which finds the most popular verses first. Top Verses is funded by private donations and the sale of Bible based resources.

The website was founded by Peter B. Chapman to make scripture more accessible to a media-aware generation. Mr. Chapman earned his B.Bus. from the University of Technology at Sydney and M.Sc. from Edinburgh University. He has worked internationally in the IT industry for over a decade and is actively involved in the local church.
